World War IIDS Bonde
At the 21st of April 1943 DS Bonde was on a journey in convoy along with 43 vessels from Oversay West of Mull of Kintyre to Halifax. A large group of German uboats were waiting for the convoy. This was characterized as one of the longest naval battles during the war. Bonde was the smallest ship in the convoy and got torpedoed at the 5th of May 1943 by the German uboat U-266 Submarine in position 5328N, 4420W. Bonde sank almost immediately and 14 men perished. Two rafts with 11 men were rescued and was an hour later picked up by an escort vessel. The convoy was attacked several times by a force of submarines which had an advantage in numbers, only 12 ships out of 42 sank. The Germans lost five submarines.
