World War IISS Empire Airman
The British SS Empire Airman was torpedoed on September 22, 1940, by the German U-boat U-100. The vessel was en route from Halifax to Cardiff in convoy HX-72 with iron ore. The ship was taken in tow but sank on September 23. Thirty-three people lost their lives in the sinking, including one Norwegian, while four people were rescued.
