World War IIDS Fagersten
SS Fagersten was on a journey in an eastbound convoy for UK loaded with 650 tons of steel and 950 tons of wood. The convoy consisted of 49 ships and were the target of a three-days-long attack between two British destroyers, four Norwegian corvettes and 15 German submarines which were attacking the convoy. On the 13th of October 1942, Fagersten was torpedoed by the German uboat U-221 in the position 5254N, 4355W. There was rough seas and heavy snow when the torpedo hit. A heel and a wiggle made it problematic to get out the lifeboats. Eight men managed to get away from the ship side in their lifeboat. Six crew members stood by the railing but it was impossible for the crew in the lifeboat to help them, due to the bilge keel was high up and could destroy the lifeboat. The 10 men in the lifeboat set out the drogue, emptied the boat of water the entire night and then observed the lights coming from the attacks on the convoy. When the dawn of the day arrived, they were taken in by the Norwegian corvette Pontentilla. 18 Norwegians and a Briton perished in the sinking.
