DS Fanefjeld var på reise fra Buldudal, Island, bestemt for Isafjord. Fanefjeld forliste 9. april 1942 uten å ha gitt livstegn fra seg. Om bord var 18 nordmenn, en brite, to kanadiere og en svenske som mannskap, dessuten los og en passasjer fra Island. Den 10. april 1942 fant man i Ørnundafjord en livbøye merket Fanefjeld med et lik som ikke lot seg identifisere. Etter krigen ble det kjent at skipet ble torpedert av den tyske ubåten U-252.
SS Fanefjeld was on a journey from Buldudal, Iceland, headed for Isafjord, Fanefjeld disappeared on the 9th of April 1942 without giving any signs of life. There were 18 Norwegians, a Briton, two Canadians and a Swede as crew, but also a pilot navigator and a passenger from Iceland. In Ørundafjord on the 10th of April 1942, was a life buoy marked with DS. Fanefjeld, along with a corpse, that could not be identified. After the the war it was known that the ship was torpedoed by the German uboat U-252.
