World War IIDS Freidig
SS Freidig was en route from Liverpool to Aberdeen when, on February 7, 1944, the ship encountered severe weather approximately 15 nautical miles north of Cape Wrath. The cargo shifted, a ventilation pipe was smashed, and the ship began taking on water. Freidig sank rapidly. A rescue boat from Thurso arrived but found only two men alive. A lifeboat with two men was observed in the breakers, but it was also taken by the sea. Twenty men perished in the sinking.
