World War IIDS Frode
SS Frode was on a journey in ballast from Newhaven to Cowes. The vessel anchored outside Littlehampton when the ship hit a mine on April 11th 1943. The explosion opened the entire bottom of the midship and the vessel sunk in four minutes. Lifeboats and rafts was blown away by the wind and the 13 survivors had no other option than to jump overboard and cling to any wreckage. An hour later, they were taken in and brought to Portsmouth where two of the survivors passed away in the hospital. A total of seven men perished in the sinking.
