World War IDS Gjertrud
DS Gjertrud was torpedoed by the German U-boat UB-112 on October 1, 1918, west of Lizard. The torpedo caused the vessel to break amidships and sink within 10 seconds. The ship was en route from Newport Mon to St. Malo, carrying a cargo of coal. Eleven people lost their lives in the shipwreck, and three were rescued by a British schooner. (Source: Sjøhistorie.no)
