World War IIDS Gunny
SS Gunny was on a journey alone from Port of Spain, Trinidad to New York with 3.100 tons of manganese ore. Gunny was on the 2nd of March 1942 torpedoed by the German U-boat U-126 in position 2709N, 6633W. The vessel which was carrying a heavy shipment of ore sank like a rock in just under a minute. The entire crew were pulled down by the undertow. The ones which managed to get to the surface clambered onto some wreckage, where they spotted two rafts which were drifting in the ocean. 13 men managed to get onto the rafts, but these rafts did not have any food nor any water. In the following days, the rafts were hit by storms and heavy rain which caused the passengers to be soaked to their bones and chilled to the core. One of the crew members had been severely wounded and died on the fourth day. The 12 passengers managed to survive until the 9th of March. At this day, they were rescued by a Swedish vessel. 10 Norwegians and four foreigners perished in the sinking.
