World War IIDS Havtor
SS Havtor was sailing alone in ballast from Reykjavik to Pictou in Nova Scotia. On the 11th of June 1941 the ship was torpedoed by the German uboat U-79 in position 6333N, 2805W. Havtor did not sink, and onboard they organized help to the wounded. A lifeboat were sent out with 14 survivors. The lifeboat had made good distance of the boat when the uboat emerged and finished the ship with artillery. The lifeboat set sail towards Iceland, but they were not spotted until they were just 5 nautical miles away from Reykjanes. The survivors were picked up by a fishing boat. Two Norwegians, two Newfoundlanders, one Briton and a Swede perished in the sinking.
