World War IIDS Hop
The DS Hop departed Bergen on 3 February 1940 in ballast, bound for Tyne. On 4 February 1940, the vessel was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-37. Hop was presumed lost in wartime service, and all 17 crew members were considered missing. The shipping company initiated investigations to learn more about the ship’s fate.
It was only after the war that it became known that a lifeboat from Hop had washed ashore and sunk at Muness, Unst, in Shetland. Fifteen men were found dead at sea. One crew member was buried at Linda Church cemetery, while the others were laid to rest at Ballistra, Unst, in Shetland.
