World War IIDS Ingerfire

SS Ingerfire was on a journey in ballast from Great Britain to Halifax and lost the convoy in a storm. On the 11th of April 1943 Ingerfire was anchored alone when it was torpedoed by the German uboat U-613 in the position 5148N, 4230W. The vessel was struck by two torpedoes. Barely were the lifeboats unhooked by the wires when the third torpedo struck the vessel. One of the lifeboats capsized, the other had a raft land on top of it and were filled with water. Ingerfire rose to a vertical position and sunk so quickly that everyone on board had to jump overboard into the water. The raft was removed from the lifeboat and then the lifeboats moored to the raft. People in the waters were picked up, most of them wounded. In the end, they had saved 28 men. On the next day, a U-boat emerged alongside the boats and asked for their names and other information. A destroyer observed the lifeboats and together with a corvette picked up the 28 survivors. Eight men perished in the sinking.
