World War IIDS Lindvangen
SS Lindvangen was on a journey from Paramaribo to Port of Spain with 2800 tons of bauxite when the ship was torpedoed the 23rd of September 1942 by the German uboat U-515 in position 0920N, 6010W. Lindvangen sank rapidly and everyone on deck had to jump into the water. The machinists and the rest of the people under deck which were around 15 people were lost. Two men managed to stay afloat on a raft and where found two hours later by a corvette. The corvette searched for more survivors and found a man on a raft, three men who were floating in a box, a man who was in the captain’s gig and one man who were floating atop of some debris. The eight survivors were set ashore in Georgetown, British Guiana. 15 men perished in the sinking.
