World War IIDS Norlom

SS Norlom (former Empire Dunlin) was anchored in Bari, which was a forward allied supply base, with supplies to the allied forces. On the 2nd December 1942, Norlom was subjected to a concentrated German aerial attack on the harbour which casued the sinking of Norlom to sink. A nearby ammunition ship was hit and spread destruction to tightly anchored ships. Oil and gasoline from a tanker started to spill out and was quickly ignited which resulted in flames spreading rapidly over the docks. A ship containing poisonous gas also sunk and leaked its deadly cargo. Lifeboats and rafts from a total of 17 ships fought their way through flames and poisonous gas. Four men died aboard Norlom, one died later at a hospital and another man died after the war because of damage from the poisonous gas. The wreck was raised in 1946 and broken up.
