World War IIDS Prominent
SS Prominent was supposed to load war material to Cilacap, Java, but the ship had to leave due when the allied forces defence collapsed against the Japanese. On the 1st of March 1942 the ship, alongside other vessels, left the city. Unbeknownst to them, the Japanese had naval forces cross the ocean southbound of Java with the help of scout planes. On the 2nd of March 1942, Prominent were attacked and sunk by a Japanese cruiser. Four Norwegians and 14 Chinese sailors lost their lives. The remaining crew-members were saved by a Dutch passenger ship and brought to Fremantle. Six escort ships and 11 merchant ships suffered the same fate as Prominent. In the harbor of Cilacap, 17 other allied ships were destroyed by the Japanese forces.
