World War IIDS Rask
SS Rask was on a journey from Cork to Newport in ballast. The vessel stayed inside Irish territorial waters, close to Tuscar Rock. But at the 19th of September 1941 the ship was attacked by three German airplanes. Two of the planes was hit by machine gun fire from Rask and went away. The third plane came back, and dealt the final blow that sunk Rask. It was a dark and extremely cold night, but one of the lifeboats managed to safely return to Blackwater. One of the lifeboats ended up in a undertow on the coast of Ireland and capsized several times. Seven of the twelve men aboard the lifeboat drowned. The other survivors were saved by a vessel which was in close proximity. Four Norwegians, three Britons and a Swedish sailor perished in the sinking.
