DS Røsten gikk i konvoi langs den engelske kanalkysten lastet med kull. Den 9. juli 1942 befant skipet seg i Lyme Bay, mellom Dartmouth og Portland, da det ble angrepet av hurtiggående tyske E-båter. Røsten ble truffet og gikk ned på under et minutt. Besetningen ble reddet etter en times tid av britisk jager og et annet dampskip. De som kom om bord i jageren, ble satt i land i Portsmouth. De fem som kom om bord i dampskipet ble imidlertid timer senere utsatt for nok et angrep, og dampskipet gikk ned. To av nordmennene om bord hadde gått under dekk for å skifte klær og mistet dermed livet. De tre som oppholdt seg på dekk, havnet i sjøen og ble reddet. Fire nordmenn og tre briter av Røstens besetning omkom i forliset.
SS Røsten was in convoy along the English coast loaded with coal. At 9th of July 1942 in Lyme Bay, between Dartmouth and Portland, the ship was attacked by German E-boats. Røsten was hit and sank in just under a minute, but the crew of the ship was saved by another steam merchant and an escort. The ones who boarded the escort vessel arrived in Portsmouth safely. On the other hand, the steamboat which carried the other five survivors of Røsten was some hours later under attack by the same E-boats and the merchant also sank. Before this happened two of the Norwegians from DS. Røsten had gone below deck to change clothes, these was killed in the second sinking while the other three which was at the deck ended up in the water and was saved shortly after. Four Norwegians and three Britons from Røst perished in the sinking.
