World War IIDS Røsten

SS Røsten was in convoy along the English coast loaded with coal. At 9th of July 1942 in Lyme Bay, between Dartmouth and Portland, the ship was attacked by German E-boats. Røsten was hit and sank in just under a minute, but the crew of the ship was saved by another steam merchant and an escort. The ones who boarded the escort vessel arrived in Portsmouth safely. On the other hand, the steamboat which carried the other five survivors of Røsten was some hours later under attack by the same E-boats and the merchant also sank. Before this happened two of the Norwegians from SS Røsten had gone below deck to change clothes, these was killed in the second sinking while the other three which was at the deck ended up in the water and was saved shortly after. Four Norwegians and three Britons from SS Røsten perished in the sinking.
