MS Berganger var på reise fra Santos med 9000 tonn stykkgods for New York og Boston. Skipet ble torpedert 2. juni 1942 av den tyske ubåten U-578 i posisjon 3925N og 6950W på høyde med New York. 21 mann var akkurat kommet i livbåtene og hadde nettopp kuttet fanglinen, da den neste torpedoen traff skipet. Av den kraftige eksplosjonen ble alle mann kastet i sjøen, mens fire mann fikk lenset livbåten. Da mannskapet hang der kom ubåten opp i overflatestilling ganske nær og tyskerne begynte å fotografere de skipbrudne norske sjøfolkene. Etter noen minutter forsvant den. Livbåten med 17 mann ble berget 4. juni av et handelsskip, mens flåten ble funnet av en jager. De siste 13 i livbåten ble reddet av amerikansk fiskefartøy. Fire mann omkom i forliset, 43 overlevde.
MV Berganger was on a journey from Santos to New York and Boston, carrying 9000-ton general cargo. On the 2nd of June 1942, the vessel was torpedoed by the German uboat U-578 in the position 3925N, 6950W, along New York. 21 men had barely managed to get into the lifeboats and unhook them when the second torpedo struck. The strong explosion blew all the men to the sea, while four men emptied their lifeboat of water. While the crew was hanging there, the uboat emerged to the surface and the Germans started to take photos of the shipwrecked Norwegian sailors. A few minutes later the uboat disappeared. On the 4th of June, the lifeboat carrying 17 men, was saved by a merchant ship, while the rafts were found by a destroyer. The last 13 crew members in a lifeboat were saved by an American fishing boat. Four men perished, while 43 survived the sinking.
