World War IIMS Prins Harald

MV Prins Harald was on a journey in convoy together with a total of 52 ships from Swansea with ammunition and other war material to North Africa. Prins Harald was torpedoed on the 20th of November 1942 by the German uboat U-263 east of Gibraltar in position 3555N, 1014W.  The ship was set ablaze, but any attempts to extinguish these flames failed. The ship blew up after just a half hour, and two officers passed away. The people in the motorboat were thrown into the sea by the shockwave from the explosion, and a British gunner passed away. The others were now in a severely dangerous situation, everyone was hurt in some way, and the flames had started to spread over the water. Eight men managed to board a raft, and two was kept afloat by some wreckage. Shortly after, the lifeboat came to the rescue, and the convoys rescue ship brought the survivors to shore in Gibraltar just two days later. Three persons perished in the sinking.
