World War IIMT Ida Knudsen

The MT Ida Knudsen was en route from Port of Spain to Gibraltar with 13,000 tons of fuel oil. When the vessel reached the designated position for rendezvous with the escort, no escort could be seen. The ship therefore continued on its planned route. On 21 July 1941, it was torpedoed by the Italian U-boat Luigi Torelli at position 34°34’N, 13°14’W. The crew abandoned ship, and 15 men were rescued by a Portuguese trawler on 15 July. A lifeboat with 17 men reached land at Agadir (Vichy-controlled France) on 28 July and was interned. Five men perished in the torpedoing, and two men died during internment in Sidi el Ayadir, French Morocco.
