World War IISS Ceiba
The Honduran-registered SS Ceiba was torpedoed on 17 March 1942 by the German U-boat U-124. The vessel was en route from Kingston to New York with a cargo of bananas. Forty-four people lost their lives in the sinking, including sailor Trygve Haugland, who perished while attempting to save a six-year-old boy. Six people were rescued.
