The Panamanian-registered SS Tambour was torpedoed on 26 September 1942 by the German U-boat U-175 near the West Indies. The vessel was en route from Paramaribo to Trinidad carrying 2,585 tons of bauxite. Eight lives were lost, while twenty-four persons were rescued.
