World War IDS Ørnen

The fishing steamer DS Ørnen was struck by a mine on December 12, 1916, during the large herring fishery in the Sulahavet. According to the maritime inquiry in February 1917, a
drifting mine was the cause of the shipwreck. The fishing steamer had a crew of 19 men, all of whom hailed from Hadsel. This tragedy left 43 children fatherless, and a total of 9 widows
were left behind.
